Maybe he knows it’s parachutes, or maybe he thinks it’s the two guys from CHiPs? (Platitude Word Salad)

May 2022

“Mark Esper, the former secretary of defense, said Sunday night on 60 Minutes that former President Donald Trump suggested paratroopers begin shooting demonstrators during the George Floyd protests outside of the White House in June 2020. Esper referred to Trump’s request as ‘shocking.’ It’s almost impossible to believe, but in fairness, Trump said the same thing about Eric,” his son.” —Jimmy Kimmel

“It’s also somehow not surprising to me that Trump would specifically request paratroopers, although it also wouldn’t surprise me if he doesn’t know what that word meant. I mean, maybe he knows it’s parachutes, or maybe he thinks it’s the two guys from CHiPs.” —Seth Meyers

“In response to Esper’s interview, Trump told 60 Minutes: ‘This is a complete lie, and 10 witnesses can back it up. Mark Esper was weak and totally ineffective, and because of it, I had to run the military.’ Right, Captain Bone Spurs had to run the military for Mark Esper. And we know that’s a lie because unlike everything else he ran, the military didn’t go bankrupt on his watch.” —Jimmy Kimmel

“Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s former personal lawyer, is backing out of an interview with the House January 6th committee at the last minute because he wanted to record it himself. “Why does he want to record the interview? Is he worried they’re going cut it together to make it sound bad? That’s what his brain already does to his mouth. Why do guys like Rudy always have some weird angle? Like thinking they’re some genius chess master calling their bluff by asking to record the meeting. But anytime Rudy has ever been recorded, it’s been bad for him. Giuliani, for instance, has been recorded calling a senator on the day of the insurrection to overturn the election results, and butt-dialing a reporter while discussing his need for cash. Rudy records himself saying incriminating things all the time. Before he talks to anyone, he should pat himself down to make sure he’s not wearing a wire.” —Seth Meyers

It reminds me of the old joke (Although, really, more of a goosestep)

Even worse, Trump’s pap walk to the photo op was accompanied by the secretary of defense, Mark Esper, and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, Mark Milley. One of the hallmarks of American democracy is the US armed forces’ proud tradition of remaining out of politics to emphasize civilian control of the military, yet on the way to the photo-op – that was, yet again, preceded by attacking peaceful protesters – Esper and Milley walked with Trump across the street. It reminds me of the old joke: why did the defense secretary and the chairman of the joint chiefs cross the road? Because the president is a chicken.” —Stephen Colbert

“On Wednesday, secretary of defense Esper defended the farcical promenade by telling reporters: ‘I didn’t know where I was going.’ You’re the secretary of defense, and your defense is that you didn’t know where you were going? The rest of us could see exactly where you were going.’ There have been so many displays of unnecessary force by police across the country, such as those dressed in riot gear on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, and large, armored military vehicles driven down the streets of the capital. Secretary Esper, do you see where we’re going now? It’s so close you don’t need a ride – you could walk. Although, really, more of a goosestep.” —Stephen Colbert

Here’s when you know you have a problem (the guy who once said gay people cause hurricanes)

“Even the televangelist Pat Robertson, spoke out against Trump’s meaningless photo op, saying it ‘wasn’t cool.’ You know we live in crazy times when we’re all agreeing with the guy who once said gay people cause hurricanes.” —Jimmy Fallon

“Here’s when you know you have a problem — you have a problem when even the 600-year-old host of ‘The 700 Club’ is not impressed.” —Jimmy Kimmel

“Trump has suggested that he might invoke an old law from 1807 to send in active-duty troops to keep the peace. That apparently didn’t sit well with his own secretary of defense, Mark Esper, who probably ended his time in the administration today.” — Jimmy Kimmel, on Esper’s disagreeing with Trump’s threat of deploying the military in response to protests

Though not as fun for the whole family (it rhymes with Yahtzee)

“The fallout from Trump’s Monday visit to St. John’s Episcopal Church continued on Wednesday. The condemnation of this is bipartisan. A Republican congressional aide, who’s also a veteran, said that secretary of defense, Mark Esper and Milley ‘have squandered the moral legitimacy of a nearly 245-year-old institution in a single farcical late-spring promenade. They have no honor, and to hell with them both.’ Buddy, they work for Trump — they’re already in hell.” — Stephen Colbert, referring to Defense Secretary Mark Esper and Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“Now, yesterday, Esper defended the indefensible, saying, ‘I didn’t know where I was going.’ You’re the secretary of defense and your defense is that you didn’t know where you were going? The rest of us could see exactly where you were going — it rhymes with ‘Yahtzee.’ Though not as fun for the whole family.” —Stephen Colbert

It’s been a big year for mentally ill clowns already (Even their weather is a lie!)

“Mike Pompeo has had trouble narrowing down when Suleimani’s imminent attack was going to happen. ‘We don’t know precisely when and we don’t know precisely where, but it was real,’ Pompeo told Fox News last week. ‘Hello, 911? Hello, I’m being robbed. I don’t know precisely when and I don’t know precisely where but I do have the address of a guy I want you to kill. This is real.’” —Stephen Colbert

“Trump, meanwhile, has peddled a line that he believed Suleimani posed an imminent threat to four unnamed embassies. He believes it would’ve been four embassies. Do we really want to live in a country where we bomb people because of what Donald Trump believes? We’re talking about a guy who believes windmills cause cancer. —Stephen Colbert

“On Sunday, the defense secretary, Mark Esper, admitted that he had not seen any evidence for Trump’s claim of a credible threat to four embassies, which demonstrates how the Trump administration is like a couple who doesn’t coordinate their lie before leaving a party.” —Stephen Colbert

“On Sunday, the official White House Twitter posted a ‘first snow of the year’ picture, which is fine except there was no snow in Washington last night or yesterday, and in fact, it was 70 degrees according to the National Weather Service. Even their weather is a lie!” —Jimmy Kimmel

Vulture Capitalism vs Democratic Socialism (this British lady might be Robin Williams)

“I would just like to point out that the guy threatening to destroy Iranian cultural sites is the same guy who lost his mind when people suggested taking down Confederate statues honoring white supremacists here in this country.” —Seth Meyers

“Trump’s illegal threats meant the secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, and secretary of defense, Mark Esper, had to make cable news rounds reassuring the public that, as Esper said, they were ‘fully confident’ the president would not give them an illegal order. Oh, you’re confident he won’t give you an illegal order? He ordered his ex-fixer to cover up an affair, and he personally wrote the check for the hush money while he was president. Lots of presidents have scandals but Trump’s the only one who paid for it by check.” —Seth Meyers

“Senator Mike Lee, called Trump’s briefing on Iran ‘un-American’ and ‘insane.’ I love when a politician figures out this late in the game that the Trump administration is insane. It’s like someone watching Mrs. Doubtfire and then turning to you after an hour and saying, ‘I think this British lady might be Robin Williams.’” —Seth Meyers

“Oh, you see, it wasn’t the worst presentation, it was the best presentation. It’s so easy to get those two things mixed up.” —Jimmy Kimmel
