I suggest renaming it ‘AAAAGGH!’ (what a cheap b*st*rd)

September 2021

“A final preview of a new, chilling tell-all on the final days of the Trump presidency. Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, the two Washington Post journalists’ book, Peril, details events in the White House between the 2020 election and the 6 January insurrection at the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob. After reading the book, I think the title isn’t strong enough. I suggest renaming it ‘AAAAGGH!’” —Stephen Colbert

“Peril is full of things you wish you didn’t need to know, such as that chairman of the joint chiefs of staff Mark Milley was worried Trump might launch a nuclear strike to distract from the election, and that Trump’s legal team laid out a six-step plan for Mike Pence to overturn the election as vice-president. It’s disturbing, but it’s easy to see why they gave the job to Pence. Everyone knows the former president has a hard time taking six steps.” —Stephen Colbert

“In other news, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced a $1 Billion donation from his Bezos Earth Fund to protect 30% of Earth’s land and sea, which sounds like a lot until you realize he’s worth $200 Billion. Why not spend another $3 Billion and protect 100% of the earth’s land and sea? Of course, what he doesn’t mention is he’s protecting the earth from himself. Is it possible to destroy the planet and save it at the same time? Jeff Bezos: the only guy who’s so rich that when you hear he donated a billion dollars to charity you’re like, ‘what a cheap bastard.’” —Jimmy Kimmel

China was afraid the former president was going to bomb his daughter’s purse factories (his children’s birthdays)

September 2021

“There is a new Trump tell-all book by journalists Bob Woodward and Robert Costa, which documented that two days after the 6 January insurrection, the joint chiefs of staff chairman, General Mark Milley, feared Trump would launch a nuclear war. That is a bombshell revelation – a bombshell about a bombshell that could bring about the revelation. According to Peril, Milley took ‘top secret’ action to prevent Trump from potentially ordering a dangerous military strike. What he did was he changed the nuclear codes to something the president would never be able to figure out: his children’s birthdays.” —Stephen Colbert

“The book also reveals that even China was nervous about a potential attack, due to increased tensions over military exercises in the South China Sea and Trump’s belligerent rhetoric. That’s how serious it was: China was afraid the former president was going to bomb his daughter’s purse factories.” —Stephen Colbert

You can tell a leader really knows his stuff when he uses the phrase, ‘do a coup.’ (quick, get me a typewriter!)

July 2021

“In a new book about Donald Trump’s final year in office, the authors write that Gen. Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, feared Trump would attempt to stage a coup to remain in power after losing the election. Trump responded on Thursday: ‘If I was going to do a coup, one of the last people I would want to do it with is Gen. Mark Milley.’ You can tell a leader really knows his stuff when he uses the phrase, ‘do a coup.’” —Jimmy Fallon

“For the next 15 minutes, he named all the people he would do a coup with: ‘I’d coup you. I’d coup you. You’re coup-able.’” —Jimmy Fallon

“OK, you’ve clearly put some thought into this thing you’re ‘not into.’” —Stephen Colbert

“We really need to come up with a better early warning system than tell-all books. ‘We’re in danger — quick, get me a typewriter!’” —Seth Meyers

“In a new book, Milley reveals that following the election night, he thought the ex-president ‘was stoking unrest, possibly in hopes of an excuse to invoke the Insurrection Act and call out the military,’ saying, ‘This is a Reichstag moment.’ No surprise — the last president was very popular with the alt-Reich.” —Stephen Colbert

“Of course, the Reichstag fire was in 1930s Germany, when an attack on the country’s legislative branch was used as a pretext to solidify fascist control. What the MAGA crowd did this year was totally different — because it was in English.” —Stephen Colbert

It reminds me of the old joke (Although, really, more of a goosestep)

“Even worse, Trump’s pap walk to the photo op was accompanied by the secretary of defense, Mark Esper, and the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, Mark Milley. One of the hallmarks of American democracy is the US armed forces’ proud tradition of remaining out of politics to emphasize civilian control of the military, yet on the way to the photo-op – that was, yet again, preceded by attacking peaceful protesters – Esper and Milley walked with Trump across the street. It reminds me of the old joke: why did the defense secretary and the chairman of the joint chiefs cross the road? Because the president is a chicken.” —Stephen Colbert

“On Wednesday, secretary of defense Esper defended the farcical promenade by telling reporters: ‘I didn’t know where I was going.’ You’re the secretary of defense, and your defense is that you didn’t know where you were going? The rest of us could see exactly where you were going.’ There have been so many displays of unnecessary force by police across the country, such as those dressed in riot gear on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, and large, armored military vehicles driven down the streets of the capital. Secretary Esper, do you see where we’re going now? It’s so close you don’t need a ride – you could walk. Although, really, more of a goosestep.” —Stephen Colbert

Though not as fun for the whole family (it rhymes with Yahtzee)

“The fallout from Trump’s Monday visit to St. John’s Episcopal Church continued on Wednesday. The condemnation of this is bipartisan. A Republican congressional aide, who’s also a veteran, said that secretary of defense, Mark Esper and Milley ‘have squandered the moral legitimacy of a nearly 245-year-old institution in a single farcical late-spring promenade. They have no honor, and to hell with them both.’ Buddy, they work for Trump — they’re already in hell.” — Stephen Colbert, referring to Defense Secretary Mark Esper and Mark A. Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“Now, yesterday, Esper defended the indefensible, saying, ‘I didn’t know where I was going.’ You’re the secretary of defense and your defense is that you didn’t know where you were going? The rest of us could see exactly where you were going — it rhymes with ‘Yahtzee.’ Though not as fun for the whole family.” —Stephen Colbert
